Project Theme:Campus Mart - Liberate Teaching & Learning from School Building Architecture Dept. of Tongji University Team leader：Shi Ji Team member：Liu XunThe concept of our design is campus-mart. It’s a mart for knowledge.
Campus-mart is a pavilion located in the center of campus between teaching buildings, in which students acquire knowledge in an entirely new mode. In campus-mart, students will become active learners by exchanging knowledge instead of passive receivers who only listen and take notes.
Nowadays, in most parts of China, teaching and Learning are in a very sick status. Students are sealed in classrooms receiving the knowledge passively. While teachers have to stand in the front of the classroom talking mechanically for 40-45 minutes. This happens every day in every school, 40-50 students and 1 teacher consist a unit which normally called class, and 5-15 units consists a bigger one which so called grades, and hundreds of grades draw the picture of the pathetic current situation of education in China.
The current mode is extremely harmful, it is rigid, mechanically, spoon-feeding, and lack of communication. It kills the creativity and critical thinking ability, which is the most important in the future.
However, this kind of situation is developed in recent years as the product of Chinese GaoKao(college entrance examination). As we all know through the history records, during ancient times, the education situation is pretty good in china. Confucius and his students talked to each other in nature environment. It is a complex situation which provides a lot of interactivity. People communicate with each other and at the meantime, they talked to the nature environment. This kind place is flowing, open and green, and it is very suitable for teaching and learning. This is the kind of place we need to create when designing a space for learning. It can be create anywhere at any time. Also, it is flexible, adaptable and full of possibilities.
We think that Knowledge is like Goods; Learning is like Shopping & Bargaining.It may happen anywhere at any time. Campus-mart is the place where students can easily talk to each other. Communication is becoming more and more complex nowadays. It is more like a net than a linear pattern. As the mode for communication changes, the space of the building also need to transform. The intersect space can provide more coincidence for meeting, more possibilities for pass though, and is therefore more opportunities to learn from each other. What’s more, communication is not only between people, but also among people, nature and built environment. The three dimensional net can accommodate all such natural element, like green trees, flowing air, warm sunlight and built environment, like the views for four buildings around, a main road that crosses through.
As we want to create a three-dimensional intersect net for the complex teaching and learning activities, the prototype of the mart is a rotated Y shape connects to each other. And to achieve the pure form of the intersect space, we don’t want to see any beams or columns. That means the shell structure with white cement is what we need.After considering both of rupture strength and compressive strength of different materials of Aalborg Portland white cement, the main structure of the building will use M.P 52.5 and the surface both internal and external will use M.P 32.5.
